Our Mission
The mission of the Dean’s Office for Medical Education and Curricular Affairs (MECA) is to create an educational program and environment that will prepare knowledgeable and caring students, highly skilled in addressing the medical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of their patients, and so sought after by residency programs across the nation.
To do this we will continue to work toward achieving the following strategic goals:
- Construct and oversee a conceptually integrated, competency driven formal curriculum that is carefully designed to facilitate comprehensive student learning
- Attend to and mold the informal curriculum so that it models and supports the IUSM formal curriculum
- Assist in the development and tracking of quality performance measures for medical education teachers delivering IUSM’s formal curriculum
- Provide leadership in educational integrated technology to support the vision, development and implementation of the statewide formal curriculum
- Attain external funding to support our goals
- Document our work through scholarly writing and presentations at the local and national levels
We value and respect students as adult learners and colleagues, promote collaboration and teamwork, and cultivate positive relationships in our activities.
Our Vision
MECA envisions an increasing public call for relationship-centered physicians, able to create effective, healing relationships with their patients, healthcare team members, and communities, as well as knowledgeable and skilled in the best developments of clinical and scientific knowledge, technology and practice. Our goal is for IUSM to be recognized as on the forefront of medical education and educational innovation that fully prepare students to take on these challenging roles.
