Trustee Teaching Awards

The Award
In June 2000, the Trustees of Indiana University reviewed the Teaching Excellence Recognition Award (TERA), which had been established by the Trustees in 1997. The Trustee’s review process considered surveys of faculty across the campuses of IU and resulted in a series of recommended changes.

The Trustees formally replaced TERA with the Trustee’s Teaching Award (TTA) in February 2001. It is to be awarded before the completion of each academic year to tenured, tenure track faculty, clinical faculty and full-time lecturers. The TTA is to be awarded to those from among these groups who have demonstrated they are the best teachers. The amount of the 2009 awards will be $2,500 and will be given to no more than 46 faculty in the IU School of Medicine.

Eligibility
Tenured and tenure-track faculty and librarians engaged in teaching are eligible as are full-time clinical facultyand full-time lecturers whose primary duties are teaching, including faculty in the School of Medicine who may be located at medical centers or be paid by institutions other than Indiana University (e.g., Clarian, Wishard, VA).

Award recipients must have demonstrated a sustained level of teaching excellence in the form of documented student learning and must have completed at least three years of service at IUPUI to be eligible (appointed on and before 7/1/05). Faculty in their third year at IUPUI at the time the selection is being made would not be eligible.

Call for Nominations
Each year the Indiana University Board of Trustees recognizes excellence in teaching through a program known as the Trustee Teaching Awards. Recipients of this prestigious award receive a stipend, have their names displayed on a plaque, and are recognized at award ceremonies at IUSM and at IUPUI. In addition the IUSM awardees are recognized at the medical school commencement in May. This year the criterion of excellence in teaching is the primary factor for selection. We anticipate that approximately 46 outstanding IUSM teachers will receive the award this year.

To Nominate Faculty
Please submit your nomination online at http://meca.iusm.iu.edu/tan/TTA.aspx and follow the instructions. You will receive a confirmation after you submit your nominee(s). Deadline for nominations is Friday, February 6, 2009.

Self-nominations will not be accepted.

Selection
A review committee, appointed by Dr. Stephen Leapman, Executive Associate Dean for Educational Affairs, will select 46 recipients based on the criterion of excellence in teaching as the primary factor for selection, including the review of student and/or course evaluations.

Frequency
Faculty may be eligible for the TTA annually and may receive an award in successive years. There is no limitation on the number of awards an individual may receive. Only one award may be received by an individual in any year.

The Award
Each award will be $2,500. The award takes the form of a cash supplement and is not added to the recipient’s base salary. The award is subject to income tax withholding.

Those selected will be honored at the IUSM Commencement (where the awards will be presented) and the Spring Faculty Meeting. In addition, TTA recipients will be recognized at the annual campus Chancellor’s Honors Convocation in April and listed on the IUSM website.
